Speaking on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq stated on Sunday that António Guterres "believes that member states are free to join different groups".
According to the UN spokesperson, Guterres' position reflects the principle of multilateralism and respect for state sovereignty. He emphasized that the United Nations does not dictate to its members whom to cooperate with or which alliances to join.
"This is a fundamental aspect of international law," Haq added. "Each country determines its own foreign policy priorities."
