The habitat of the UAE, researcher Ibrahim Sharif al-Hashemi, participated in an aerial expedition that completed the first circumnavigation flight around the South Pole on two helicopters from December 4 last year to January 17 this year. This unprecedented success made him the first Emirati citizen to take part in this historic journey.
The expedition started from Union Glacier and returned there, covering a distance of 19,050 kilometers over more than a month. Preparation for this challenging endeavor took seven years to overcome logistical difficulties and harsh weather conditions.
The expedition was led by researcher Frederik Paulsen. During the journey, the group explored remote areas of the Antarctic continent, encountering magnificent natural landscapes: enormous ice mountains, frozen rivers, all amidst blizzards and strong winds.
This expedition becomes an important step in the field of aerial research, strengthening the participation of emiratis in global research missions and confirming the possibility of carrying out long aerial flights in the harshest natural conditions on Earth.
