UAE Launches Design Competition to Reinterpret Traditional Crafts

The competition continues to reinforce the commitment of 'Bayt Al-Sana'at' (House of Craftsmen) to nurturing emerging talents and preserving the rich heritage of traditional handicrafts in the United Arab Emirates. The competition opens its doors to all creators across the country to engage with authentic Emirati crafts and showcase them in contemporary designs. The competition will provide an innovative platform to reinterpret Emirati handicrafts with a modern vision. The program begins with an initial nomination of 20 participants, who then enter a specially designed program to develop designs in close collaboration with a select group of skilled craftsmen. Finally, the Product Design and Decorative Arts category invites submissions of unique designs under the theme 'Innovative Daily Home Tools,' including ceramic items, tableware, and accessories. Submissions undergo a secret judging process conducted by a prestigious committee of experts in art, design, traditional crafts, and education. Entries are evaluated based on criteria including creativity, craftsmanship, innovation, relevance to the competition theme, and overall artistic and design merit, ensuring a fair and accurate assessment. Participants are encouraged to present their creations in three main categories: Product Design and Decorative Arts, and Furniture Design. The Furniture Design category covers original furniture pieces such as chairs, tables, and lighting fixtures that blend traditional handcraftsmanship with modern aesthetics. The second edition of the 'Bayt Al-Sana'at Design Competition,' launched under the patronage of 'Mubadala,' has begun accepting entries, following the remarkable success of its inaugural edition. The 'Bayt Al-Sana'at Design Competition' celebrates local creative talents and is open to all distinguished artists and designers, as well as students of art and design enrolled in higher education institutions based in the UAE. The competition provides an innovative platform to reinterpret Emirati handicrafts with a modern vision. This journey culminates in the selection of eight winners.
