Dubai's Energy Demand Surges Amid Economic Growth

In 2024, electricity demand in Dubai will increase by 5.4% compared to 2023, reaching 59,594 gigawatt-hours. This was stated by the Director General and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer. He noted that DEWA also observed a significant increase in peak demand in 2024 - by 3.4%, reaching 10.76 gigawatts. The total installed generating capacity of DEWA is 17,179 gigawatts.

DEWA continues to develop world-class electricity and water infrastructure to keep pace with the growth of Dubai's population and stabilize the growth of the emirate's economy. Underlining the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in developing Dubai as a global hub and preferred place for living and work, as well as a center for business and tourism, Al Tayer emphasized that each DEWA committee strives to improve resource utilization and operational efficiency in the services provided.

DEWA is also actively supporting Dubai's strategy for clean energy until 2050 and Dubai's strategy for achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, with special attention to sustainability and operational excellence. 20% of the total installed generating capacity of electricity generation comes from clean energy.
