The UN warns that coral reefs are facing destruction due to rising ocean temperatures and urges countries to increase funding for urgent conservation efforts during a special session at the COP 16 biodiversity conference.

Urgent Call to Save Coral Reefs

The Organization of United Nations and countries, located at the periphery, warned about the destruction of coral reefs in the world due to rising ocean temperatures. They called on countries to increase funding for urgent measures to save the reefs. At an extraordinary special session held in the fields of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16), it was noted that coral reefs around the world are experiencing the worst levels of depletion. The session was convened to stimulate countries to increase contributions to the Global Fund for Coral Reefs, following the fact that new obligations amounting to 30 million dollars did not instill hope for meetings of the conference this week.

"Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN, emphasized that coral reefs are vital for global ecosystems, providing livelihoods and sustenance for millions of people, and also offer protection from poverty. He also stressed that coral reefs are currently on the brink of extinction due to climate change and other threats," the statement quotes.
