Date Market in the UAE: Variety of Types and Increased Demand in Ramadan

The UAE has a wide variety of date types. A survey conducted by 'Emirates Today' in Dubai and Sharjah revealed about 33 brands of dates. The most prominent varieties include 'Fard', 'Majdoul', 'Saqi', 'Safawi', and 'Lulu'. The countries of origin for the dates sold in the UAE include the Emirates, which has the largest share, followed by Saudi Arabia, as well as products from Jordan, Morocco, and Iran. During Ramadan, the demand for all types of dates increases by over 70% compared to normal periods, with retail outlets offering wide-ranging discounts on dates ranging from 20% to 60%. Dates are available in various forms, including traditional whole fruits, date paste, 'dibs' (molasses), dates coated in milk, dark, or white chocolate, and those stuffed with nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pistachios. Stuffed and organic dates are sold at higher prices. Each date variety has distinct characteristics that appeal to specific consumer groups. For instance, 'Halawi' dates are known for their brownish-golden color, soft texture, and sweet taste, and are traditionally served with Arabic coffee. Dates are considered a superfood, providing the body with quick energy, and are an excellent source of antioxidants, potassium, magnesium, iron, and copper, making them an important food for maintaining bone, digestive, and heart health.
